Svanholm Estate in Hornsherred – Organic Community and Historic Manor

Svanholm Estate in Hornsherred is Denmark’s oldest continuously operating collective community and has been an eco-community since 1978. Here, the residents of Svanholm live and work with sustainability, community living and agriculture at the heart of everyday life, just 55 kilometres from Copenhagen.

Since taking over the estate in 1978, Svanholm has developed into a viable example of an alternative way of life in Denmark. Around 70 adults and 30 children live across the estate’s 420 hectares, jointly running a diverse organic farm alongside several small businesses. Shared finances, communal meetings and a communal kitchen are all part of daily life, while private homes ensure space for personal privacy.

Historic surroundings in scenic countryside

The main building at Svanholm Estate was built in 1744 and is now a protected heritage building. These historic surroundings form the setting for a modern community in the beautiful countryside of Hornsherred, a scenic peninsula west of Copenhagen. The combination of manor house atmosphere, organic farming and community-based living makes Svanholm a unique destination for visitors interested in sustainability and alternative housing models.

Nature playground for children and playful souls

In 2026, Svanholm opened a nature playground created in collaboration with Leg & Landskab. Integrated into the surrounding landscape, the playground invites children and families to explore, climb, balance and play freely using natural materials in safe and inspiring surroundings.

Svanholm Café

Visitors can also enjoy Svanholm Café, which is mainly run by volunteer residents from the collective community. Here you can enjoy coffee, light meals and homemade specialities in relaxed, green surroundings.

Opening hours

Guided tours take place on Sundays at 11.00 am. The price is DKK 130 per person, including a cup of coffee in the café.

Organic farm shop with seasonal produce

Svanholm’s farm shop offers organic vegetables grown in the estate’s own fields. Visitors can buy fresh seasonal produce directly from the growers, and a visit to the shop can easily be combined with a walk in the surrounding countryside.
