Your plan for two days in Frederikssund

  • Day 1: Art at Willumsens Museum, Vikings on Kalvø and an evening by Roskilde Fjord.
  • Day 2: A trip across the fjord to Jægerspris Castle, with time for the castle park and the forest.

Stay overnight in the area and make time for both the town and the surrounding countryside. You can travel from Copenhagen by S-train and bring your bike to explore the other side of the fjord too.

Day 1: Art, Vikings and fjord life in Frederikssund

Take your time at Willumsens Museum

Start the day at Willumsens Museum. Discover J.F. Willumsen's paintings, sculptures and ceramics, with bold colours and striking forms throughout the exhibitions.

Explore the current special exhibitions too, and take time to look closely at the works. If you are visiting with children, you can explore materials, colours and figures together. Combine your visit with coffee or breakfast at Café Ærligt in the museum.

Coffee and a break at Café Ærligt

Café Ærligt at Willumsens Museum is a place to take a break before or after the exhibitions. Enjoy coffee, cake or ice cream, and visit the café even without entering the museum. Check current opening hours and the options for breakfast or brunch.

The Viking Settlement on Kalvø

Walk along the fjord to the Frederikssund Viking Settlement. Here you can see a reconstructed longhouse, pit houses and a wooden walkway in the landscape beside the water. Admission to the site is free, so you can stop by and explore at your own pace.

If you would like to experience crafts, markets or other activities, choose a day when events are taking place at the settlement. Find the latest dates in the events calendar.

Lunch overlooking Roskilde Fjord

At Restaurant Kalvø, you can stop for lunch close to the Viking Settlement and enjoy views over the fjord. It is a convenient stop if you are spending this part of the day around Kalvø and the waterfront.

You can also bring a picnic and find somewhere to take a break along the way. Check the restaurant's opening hours if you plan to eat there.

A harbour swim, small streets and dinner by the water

Back at the harbour, take a detour through the old Skyllebakken neighbourhood or sit down with a view of the boats. If you have brought your swimwear, Frederikssund Harbour Bath is another stop to consider. The pool is 2.5 metres deep and best suited to experienced swimmers. Read the current rules and access information before your visit.

Finish the day with dinner at Restaurant Toldboden by the harbour. Book a table so you can enjoy the evening without rushing on.

A summer evening at Frederikssund Vikingespil

During the performance season, spend the evening at Frederikssund Vikingespil, the Viking theatre on Kalvø. Plan your meal around the start of the performance and book your ticket in advance. Staying overnight gives you time to stay until the performance ends.

Day 2: Across the fjord to Jægerspris Castle

After an overnight stay, head to Jægerspris. If you have brought your bike, ride across Kronprins Frederiks Bro and continue towards the castle. The route through the forest recommended by the castle is approximately 7.6 kilometres from Frederikssund Station. Allow for the return journey too, and leave time for breaks.

Jægerspris Castle and the story of Countess Danner

At Jægerspris Castle, visit the museum about King Frederik VII and Countess Danner. It offers a different chapter of the area's history from the one you explored at the Viking Settlement.

The museum is open seasonally. Check the castle's opening hours before choosing your travel dates.

The castle park and a walk in the forest

Make time for a walk in the castle park and the area around Jægerspris Castle. It is a peaceful way to round off your visit before heading back towards Frederikssund.

You do not need to cycle far into Nordskoven to enjoy a day of history and nature. Choose a short walk near the castle, or plan a longer forest trip if you would like to spend more of the day outdoors. Kongeegen, the ancient oak, is further away and needs a separate route plan.

Where to stay in and around Frederikssund

Choose your accommodation to suit how you plan to get around. Some places are in the town, while others require a further journey by bike, bus or car. Check connections to both Frederikssund and Jægerspris before booking.

Would you like to stay a little longer?

An extra night leaves room for more trips around Hornsherred. For example, choose a ride with Puchtours as a separate experience. Check availability, booking details and requirements with the organiser.

If you would rather discover local wine production, look into a guided tour at LangeLinie Vin. Arrange your visit in advance.

Take the train from Copenhagen to Frederikssund - and bring your bike

Take the S-train from Copenhagen to Frederikssund Station and begin your stay here. Find current departures and journey times in Rejseplanen, the Danish journey planner. From the station, you can walk to the town centre and harbour, while a bike makes it easier to combine several stops and continue to Jægerspris.

Taking a bike on the S-train

You can bring a regular bicycle on the S-train free of charge. Use the train's flex areas and allow extra time in case there is no room for your bike on the first departure. At Nørreport, you cannot board or leave the train with a bike on weekdays from 07:00 to 09:00 and from 15:30 to 17:30. Check DSB's current rules for bicycles on S-trains before travelling.

Getting to Jægerspris and your accommodation

If you are travelling without a bike, check bus connections from Frederikssund Station to Jægerspris in Rejseplanen. Also check connections to your accommodation and for the return journey, especially if you plan a late dinner or an evening performance.

Read more about transport in Fjordlandet and find more experiences on the Frederikssund town page.
