Explore the Viking Settlement on Kalvøen
Walk among reconstructed houses at Frederikssund Viking Settlement and discover how people lived during the Viking Age. Combine your visit with a walk around Kalvøen beside the fjord. In summer, you can also plan your trip around a performance of Frederikssund Vikingespil, the town’s open-air Viking theatre.
Discover Danish art at Willumsens Museum
Bold colours, powerful emotions and an artist who followed his own path. At Willumsens Museum, explore paintings, sculptures and other works by Danish artist J.F. Willumsen. Take your time with the exhibitions, then stop for coffee or lunch at the museum’s Café Ærligt.
Enjoy Roskilde Fjord from the harbour and bridge
Walk along the waterfront and take in the views towards Hornsherred and Crown Prince Frederik’s Bridge, known locally as Kronprins Frederiks Bro. To experience the fjord from the water, join a scheduled summer sailing aboard the historic steamship S/S Skjelskør from Frederikssund Harbour. Check departures before planning your day.
Swim in Roskilde Fjord at Frederikssund Harbour Bath
Pack your swimwear and a towel if you would like a swim during your day trip. Frederikssund Harbour Bath is centrally located beside Roskilde Fjord, with free access to the basin throughout the year. The basin is 2.5 metres deep and suitable only for confident swimmers. Check current opening hours and conditions before visiting.
Cross the fjord to Færgegården and Færgelunden
Continue across Crown Prince Frederik’s Bridge to Frederikssund Museum, Færgegården, and explore the history of life around the fjord. If you fancy more time outdoors, carry on into Færgelunden and follow the woodland paths.
Stop for lunch by the fjord
Choose a lunch stop along your route. Restaurant Kalvø is a convenient choice when visiting the Viking Settlement, while Restaurant Toldboden is beside the harbour. Both let you enjoy views of the water while you eat.
Bring your bike and continue to Jægerspris Castle
A bike lets you explore beyond the town and discover Hornsherred. Jægerspris Castle is approximately 7.6 kilometres from Frederikssund Station. Ride across Crown Prince Frederik’s Bridge and continue to the castle and its park, where you can see Countess Danner’s grave and sculptor Johannes Wiedewelt’s memorial monuments. Check the museum’s seasonal opening dates if you would also like to go inside.

Getting to Frederikssund from Copenhagen
Take an S-train towards Frederikssund and get off at Frederikssund Station. The journey from Copenhagen Central Station, København H, takes around 45 minutes, depending on the service. The station is in the town, so you can continue on foot or by bike.

Taking your bike on the S-train
You can bring a standard bicycle on the S-train free of charge. You need a valid ticket for yourself, but your bike does not require a separate ticket or a reservation. Look for the bicycle symbol on the train and use the designated bike area.
If there is no room, try another bike area or wait for the next train. Bicycles cannot be taken on rail replacement buses, so check for service changes before travelling.
