Your plan for two days in Hornsherred

  • Day 1: Selsø Castle and Selsø Lake, lunch in Ferslev, and a choice between Egholm Museum and a walk in Ejby Ådal.
  • Day 2: Local flavours at Svanholm and Hansens Ice Cream, followed by Jægerspris Castle and its park.

Stay overnight and make time for both Roskilde Fjord and Isefjord. Use this guide to plan a weekend in Hornsherred, choosing stops to suit your interests and their opening hours. A car makes it easier to combine experiences across the peninsula. If you are cycling or using public transport, choose fewer stops and plan a shorter route.

Day 1: Selsø Castle and nature by the fjords

Start at Selsø Castle, where you can explore the old manor house and rooms that tell the story of life on the estate. Make time for Selsø Lake too. From the birdwatching tower, you can look out across the lake and meadows, so bring binoculars if you have them. Check the castle’s opening hours before planning your museum visit.

Lunch in Ferslev and history at Egholm

Stop for lunch at Chefs Cottage and Garden Café in Ferslev. Check the opening hours and consider booking a table in advance. If you would like to spend the afternoon exploring history, continue to Egholm Museum, with collections covering the Second World War, hunting and the Wild West. Choose either the museum visit or a longer walk in nature, leaving time for breaks along the way.

A walk in Ejby Ådal and coffee by Isefjord

If you would rather spend the afternoon outdoors, choose Ejby Ådal. Follow the paths through the hilly landscape and enjoy the views over Isefjord. Wear comfortable walking shoes and choose a walk to suit the time you have. Sealevel Coffee Bar by the ferry landing for Orø is an option for coffee before or after your walk, if the opening hours fit your plans.

Places to stay in Hornsherred

Stay overnight and make time for the fjords and the smaller places along the way. Choose your accommodation to suit the experiences you want to visit and how you will get around. Gershøj Kro & Strandhotel is by Roskilde Fjord, Nordgården offers holiday apartments near Skuldelev, and DCU Camping Kulhuse is an option if you want to spend more time in northern Hornsherred. Check the options and availability directly with each place.

Day 2: Local flavours and Jægerspris Castle

Spend your second day in northern Hornsherred. Combine a visit to Svanholm or Hansens Ice Cream with Jægerspris Castle. Choose your stops according to the day’s opening hours and allow time for both the museum and a walk.

A café, a farm shop and ice cream along the way

At Svanholm, you can visit the café and farm shop when they are open, or choose a day with a guided tour of the community. Stop at Hansens Ice Cream Parlour and Café for locally made ice cream. Check the opening hours at both places before setting off.

Jægerspris Castle and a walk in the castle park

At Jægerspris Castle, visit the museum about King Frederik VII and Countess Danner. Continue with a walk in the castle park and the surrounding area. The museum opens seasonally, so check its opening hours before choosing your travel dates. A visit to the King Oak further into Nordskoven forest needs a separate route plan.

Would you like more time to explore?

An extra night leaves room for a longer outing. Choose a trip with Puchtours, for example, or plan a walk or cycle ride to the King Oak in Jægerspris Nordskov. Check the route and distance to the tree in advance.

From Kulhuse, the M/F Columbus ferry offers an option for continuing to Sølager when it is running. Check the current sailing schedule. If you would like to continue towards Frederikssund, find inspiration in our guide to two days in Frederikssund.

Getting to Hornsherred by train and exploring the area

From Copenhagen, take the S-train to Frederikssund or a train to Roskilde, then continue by bus to your stops in Hornsherred. Find a connection that suits your accommodation and plans in Rejseplanen, the Danish journey planner. Check your return journey too, especially if you are travelling at the weekend.

Bring your bike on the train

A bike lets you travel further from the station and explore more along the way. You can take a standard bicycle on the S-train to Frederikssund free of charge. Check DSB’s current rules for bicycles on S-trains. If you take another type of train to Roskilde, check the train operator’s rules for bicycle tickets and any space reservations.

Hornsherred covers a large area. Choose one part of the peninsula as the base for your cycle trip, and work out the distances between your accommodation and the places you want to visit. A car makes it easier to combine southern and northern Hornsherred in two days.
