Svanholm Manor in Hornsherred – organic community and historic country estate

Svanholm Manor in Hornsherred is Denmark’s oldest large-scale communal living community still in operation and has been an organic community since 1978. Just 55 kilometres from Copenhagen, its residents live and work together with community life and organic farming at the heart of everyday life.

Since taking over the estate in 1978, Svanholm has developed into a well-established example of an alternative way of life in Denmark. Around 70 adults and 30 children live on the 420-hectare estate, where they jointly run a diverse organic farm and several small businesses. Shared finances, communal meetings and a shared kitchen are part of daily life, while private homes provide space for privacy.

Historic surroundings in the Hornsherred countryside

The main building at Svanholm Manor dates from 1744 and is now a listed building. Its historic setting provides the backdrop for a modern community in the Hornsherred countryside. The combination of a traditional manor-house setting, organic farming and communal living makes Svanholm an interesting place to visit for anyone curious about organic agriculture and alternative forms of living.

Nature playground for children and the young at heart

In 2026, Svanholm opened a nature playground created in collaboration with Leg & Landskab. Designed to blend into its surroundings, the playground encourages play, movement and exploration using natural materials. Children and families can climb, balance, explore and enjoy free play.

Svanholm Café

Svanholm also has a café, run mainly by volunteer members of the community. Visitors can stop for a cup of coffee, light dishes and homemade specialities in relaxed surroundings.

Opening hours:

See Svanholm Storkollektiv’s current opening hours.

Guided tours take place on Sundays at 11 am. The price is DKK 130 per person, including a cup of coffee in the café.

Farm shop with seasonal produce

Svanholm’s farm shop sells organic vegetables grown on the estate’s own fields. Here you can buy fresh seasonal produce directly from the growers. A visit to the shop can easily be combined with a walk through the surrounding countryside.
