Shelter and facilities

The shelter site consists of one shelter with space for 6-7 people. The shelter is located in a small, former gravel pit, where the surrounding vegetation creates a sheltered and wind-protected setting. The area feels calm and intimate, despite being close to well-known attractions.

The site includes a fire pit and benches, making it easy to gather for cooking and relaxing. There is also access to a composting toilet adjacent to the site.

Historic surroundings

The shelter is located in the heart of Gl. Lejre, an area with strong connections to Denmark’s early history. Lejre Museum is within short walking distance, and directly opposite the shelter you will find the impressive stone ship setting, which bears witness to the area’s importance during the Iron Age and Viking Age. Staying here offers a special opportunity to experience the landscape once the day visitors have left.

Access, parking and rules of use

There is no vehicle access directly to the shelter site, and it is not permitted to transport equipment to the site by car. Parking is available at the large car park by Lejre Museum, located approximately 500 metres from the shelter.

Water can generally be collected at the museum, although the water supply may be closed during winter periods.

The shelter cannot be booked but is available for use on a first come, first served basis. Please note that pitching tents at the shelter site is not permitted.

Make the most of the many opportunities in the area

The area around Gl. Lejre is ideal for both walking and cycling experiences.

Several well-known routes pass directly by the shelter, including the Skjoldung Trails, where several sections intersect in Gl. Lejre. The Danish Pilgrims’ Route and Gudernes Stræde also run through the area, offering opportunities for longer walks in the open landscape.

For cyclists, the Monks’ Route, national cycle route 88, passes by the shelter, while the Ice Age Route, cycle route 44, is located approximately 500 metres away at Orehøjvej.

Lejre Museum also provides shorter walking routes, making it easy to combine your stay with small excursions to burial mounds, ancient monuments and viewpoints in the landscape.
