Selsø Sø - birdwatching in Hornsherred
Watch waterbirds at Selsø Sø on the Hornsherred peninsula, west of Copenhagen. Enjoy views from the birdwatching tower and higher ground around Selsø Church while the lake and meadows remain a protected refuge for birds.

Discover the rich birdlife at Selsø Sø
Selsø Sø and the surrounding meadows form a protected nature reserve that is home to large numbers of waterbirds. In winter, greylag geese, tufted ducks and goldeneyes are among the birds that rest at the lake, while summer brings breeding birds such as black-headed gulls, common terns, avocets and marsh harriers.
From fjord inlet to freshwater lake
Selsø Sø was originally an inlet of Roskilde Fjord, but for several hundred years it has been separated from the fjord by a dyke. A strait once ran through Selsø and Hov Mose, meaning that Selsø Parish was situated on an island. Today, Selsø Sø is a remnant of this former strait.
See Selsø Sø from the birdwatching tower
The area immediately around the lake is closed to the public to protect the natural environment and birdlife. Instead, the lake can be viewed from the surrounding higher ground. There are particularly good views from the birdwatching tower on the southern side of the lake and from the area in front of Selsø Church.
Parking is available at Selsø Church and Møllekrogen. At Møllekrogen, visitors arriving by water can also come ashore.
