A kingdom in Roskilde Fjord

Elleore is a privately owned island in Roskilde Fjord and a self-proclaimed kingdom with its own monarchs, parliamentary government, ministers and laws. The kingdom also has its own currency and issues its own stamps.

The island was purchased by a group of teachers in August 1944 and subsequently proclaimed a kingdom. Before that, Elleore had served as a filming location for the 1907 silent film The Lion Hunt, which is considered one of Denmark’s early feature films.

Elle Week brings the island to life

For most of the year, Elleore lies quiet and uninhabited in the fjord. The citizens of the kingdom stay on the island only during the annual Elle Week.

During Elle Week, the citizens gather to celebrate the kingdom and take part in its traditions and ceremonies. The monarchs, ministers and other institutions of the kingdom assume their roles, bringing the small island to life for a brief period.

Elleore can be seen from the water while sailing on Roskilde Fjord. The island lies north of Roskilde and can be viewed from boats travelling through the fjord towards Roskilde Harbour.

The island is privately owned, and visitors are not permitted to go ashore. It should therefore be experienced from the water with respect for the island’s privacy and natural surroundings.
