Lakes, hills and Kildemosen

In the northern part of Himmelev Skov, the lakes Fanen and Noden lie in an area once used for gravel extraction. Young trees alternate with open ground and views across the lakes. To the south, the landscape changes at Kildemosen, where wet alder woodland and reedbeds cover the damp ground.

Paths lead around the area and through the wetland, with wooden walkways along parts of the route. The ground can be wet, so suitable footwear is recommended.

An active day in the forest

The forest roads and paths offer opportunities for walking and running in the hilly landscape. A walk or run can be combined with a workout at the outdoor fitness equipment. There are also orienteering routes and a waymarked mountain bike trail.

Himmelev Skov has two fenced dog exercise areas where dogs may be off the lead, provided they are kept under control. Dogs must be on a lead elsewhere in the forest.

Campfires and overnight stays

There is a basic camping area for tents by Lake Fanen, and campfire sites south of Herregårdsvej.

There are also two open-fronted shelters, which are booked together through the Danish Nature Agency (Naturstyrelsen). The shelter site can be reached on foot or by bike, but not directly by car. Visitors need to bring water and firewood.

Parking and access

Parking is available at Store Valbyvej to the north and at Herregårdsvej. A path leads from Store Valbyvej towards the lakes. The terrain is hilly, and the smaller paths can be difficult to negotiate in a wheelchair.

On Herregårdsvej, the forest car park is opposite the riding school and provides access to both the northern and southern parts of the forest.
