Woodland, lakes and history

Bidstrup is a hilly landscape of broadleaved and coniferous woodland, with habitats for rare butterflies, dragonflies and orchids. Part of the woodland is included in plans for Naturnationalpark Bidstrupskovene, a proposed nature national park.

The forests have a historic connection to Copenhagen. King Frederik III gave them to the city’s citizens in recognition of their defence of Copenhagen during the wars with Sweden.

Choose your woodland outing

Follow marked walking trails, explore the bridleways or try the mountain bike trail. The Skjoldungestien walking route also crosses the area. Storskoven near Hvalsø has a fenced dog exercise area where dogs may be off the lead under control.

Several woodland shelters offer overnight stays, with different conditions for use and booking. There is a seasonal toilet at Avnstrup and tables and benches at several stopping places. The terrain is hilly, so choose a route that suits your ability and equipment.

Use the Danish Nature Agency’s practical guide and the Bidstrup Forests map to plan your visit.
