Black Moon at Store Kattinge Sø
Watch thousands of tufted ducks rise from Store Kattinge Sø during the winter months and fly towards Roskilde Fjord at dusk, a local natural phenomenon known as Black Moon.
The winter flight of the tufted ducks
During the winter months, the Kattinge Lakes form one of Northern Europe’s largest resting areas for tufted ducks. From November to February, as many as 30,000 ducks may rest on the lakes during the day.
Around one hour after sunset, the birds rise in large flocks and fly towards Roskilde Fjord to feed on mussels and other organisms on the seabed. As the flocks move through the twilight, the spectacle is known locally as Black Moon.
Where can you experience Black Moon?
The phenomenon can be seen from the road between Store Kattinge Sø and Kattinge Vig. East of the sluice at Kattinge Værk, a path also leads to a birdwatching tower at the northern end of the lake. Arrive before sunset, bring binoculars and keep a respectful distance from the birds.
