Guide: Early Signs of Spring in Boserup Forest
Head out on the ‘Anemone Trail’
Spring is anemone season, and in March and April the wood anemones bloom in Boserup Forest. It is a truly unique sight: in large areas, a carpet of anemones spreads across the woodland floor, painting it in the most beautiful colours.

Wood anemones bloom before the beech trees. And once the beech leaves fully unfold, they cast shade over the forest floor where the anemones grow. That’s why the anemones hurry to bloom and set seed before the light disappears.
In Boserup Forest in Roskilde, you can find both the common white and yellow anemones, as well as the rare blue anemones.
Take a walk along the Anemone Trail, a roughly 4 km route through the forest where the anemones especially carpet the woodland floor in white.

The Balance Trail: Midgårdsormen
Strengthen and challenge your children’s motor skills on the balance trail Midgårdsormen in Boserup Forest. Then head down to the water and enjoy the view. If you turn left, you can reach the Boserup shelter area, which also lies right by the water. Light a fire, make hot cocoa, and enjoy your packed lunch. Let the children roam freely, explore, and build dens in the undergrowth – or bring out the whittling knife.
If you still have energy to burn, turn right when you reach the water and continue towards Lerskrænten. Once you reach the top, you’ll be rewarded with fantastic views over Kattinge Vig and Ringøen, and you can follow the cliff path along the coast.

Go on an adventure with the ‘Natureventyr’ app
The Skjoldungernes Land National Park, in collaboration with the municipalities of Lejre, Roskilde and Frederikssund, has developed a series of adventures that can be experienced independently in nature via the “Natureventyr” app.
Go exploring
Natureventyr is written specifically for selected areas, and the stories are freely available in the “Natureventyr” app. Each adventure is told as a treasure hunt, where each chapter is placed along a route – and the storyline is based on things you can see, hear and touch along the way. During the experience, children are drawn into the story through questions and challenges.
With Natureventyr, the best and most child-friendly routes in nature are combined with play, movement, challenges and learning.
How to get started
To begin, simply download the “Natureventyr” app and go to the locations where the adventures start.
Visit a 1,000-year-old tree
Bring the family to the enchanting Nordskov forest by Jægerspris Castle, where you’ll find the King Oak, Denmark’s oldest living being.

The King Oak is between 1,500 and 2,000 years old and was already a fully grown tree when the Viking king Gorm the Old ruled over the Danes. It is Denmark’s – and likely also Northern Europe’s – oldest and thickest oak tree.
You can extend the experience by taking a walk in the park at Jægerspris Castle, where you can meet, among other things, the King Oak’s descendant, the Danneregen, which was created in 1986 as a graft taken from the King Oak.

Listen to the spring birdsong
Spring is the season of song – at least for our many breeding songbirds. From sunrise, the birds sing to mark their territories and attract mates. Many species can already be heard in March, such as the skylark, which hovers high in the sky, singing with remarkable strength. As spring progresses, more and more songbirds return from the south, and the chorus becomes richer and far more intense. Listen also for the woodpeckers’ drumming, which – just like the songbirds’ singing – marks territory and attracts females.
Book a shelter – for example in Bidstrup Forests or Boserup Forest – and wake up surrounded by the morning birdsong. Bring binoculars or a camera; the early light is perfect for nature photography.

Guide to the best nature areas in Fjordlandet
Spring has arrived, and Fjordlandet — part of Skjoldungernes Land National Park — is bursting with outdoor experiences. Here, you’ll find dramatic landscapes, shimmering blue water and enchanting forests! Below are VisitFjordlandet’s suggestions for excursions in this stunning natural area.
Discover the nature of Gundsømagle
A wonderful destination for the whole family!

The 800-metre nature trail and the approximately 300-metre boardwalk through the reed forest are unique in Denmark, offering a rare opportunity to experience reed-bed birdlife up close. The boardwalk is designed to give you a wonderful sense of being ‘lost’ in nature.
The bridge connects the nature reserve’s two birdwatching towers, from where you can enjoy sweeping views of the landscape. Here, you may spot species such as bearded tits, grey herons and marsh harriers.
For cyclists, the cycle route “Jyllingesløjfen” passes by Lake Gundsømagle and the bird reserve. Lake Gundsømagle is a protected bird sanctuary owned and managed by the Danish Bird Protection Foundation.
