VisitFjordlandet has put together a guide to great fishing spots suitable for children. In addition, we have asked a local fishing enthusiast, Anders Rugbjerg Hoppe, to share his recommendations for fishing spots that are particularly well suited to families with children.

1. Avnsø in the Bidstrup Forests

“We spend a lot of time in nature in general, especially at weekends, when we often go out exploring. My two daughters love joining me on fishing trips all year round, and they really enjoy the excitement of sitting and watching to see if the float moves. Using spinners and spoons, you can catch both perch and pike. It’s a great way to spend quality time together and experience nature.

Avnsø is definitely a favourite spot when the children come along. There are good chances of catching roach, perch and pike here. Roach are easy and fun to catch with children. I usually use a simple paste made from flour and water, place a small piece on a single hook, and fish with a float on the line.”

Remember: Always check where fishing is permitted – see the sign by the picnic tables and benches.

Parking: At the end of Tjørnehusvej.

2. Grønlien Lake

Grønlien Lake in the town of Frederikssund is an ideal place to start for beginners and families with children. The lake is easy to access and is home to plenty of interesting fish species such as roach, perch and carp. The fish are generally easy to tempt if you use float fishing with a worm.

Parking is available both on Ågade and on Bonderupvej.

3. Lynghøjsøerne

The Lynghøj Lakes in Roskilde are a child-friendly fishing area. With clear water and beautiful natural surroundings, the area offers three excellent lakes, making it easy to enjoy a well-rounded fishing experience. In the lakes, you can catch coarse fish such as roach, as well as perch and pike. There are several good parking options in the area.

4. Munkholmbroen (Munkholm Bridge)

Munkholm Bridge is a great place to fish for garfish and herring during the spring months. In summer, mackerel also pass this fishing spot, and with a bit of luck you may even hook a sea trout. Fishing is easy from the stone embankments on both sides of the bridge. There are good parking facilities east of the bridge. If you visit at other times of the year, please note that fishing in the area is prohibited from 16 September to 15 January. Waders are not required.

5. Veddelev Harbour & Jyllinge Marina

During spring and summer, Veddelev Harbour offers good opportunities to catch garfish and, occasionally, flatfish. Parking is available in the harbour’s public car parks, and fishing takes place from the outer stone groynes, where garfish migrate past from late April to July. Fishing inside the harbour itself is not permitted. Waders are not required.

At Jyllinge Marina, fishing from the outer side of the groynes is easy and comfortable. Fishing is mainly for garfish and sea trout, with a chance of catching flatfish as well. Fishing inside the marina is not permitted. Parking is available in the marina’s public car parks.

6. Jernbanedæmningen (the Railway Embankment)

The Railway Embankment (also known locally as “Tandstumperne”) on the Hornsherred side of Roskilde Fjord offers exciting fishing for garfish and sea trout. It is possible to walk out onto the old railway embankment and fish from both sides. The water is shallow on either side, but it becomes deeper towards the tip. Strong currents can occur at the outer end, where, in late summer, you may also be lucky enough to catch mackerel. Garfish can be caught from late April to July, while sea trout can be fished for all year round. There are good parking facilities just south of the road leading out to the embankment. Waders are not required.
