The Midgard Serpent in Boserup Forest - play and balance in nature
The Midgard Serpent in Boserup Forest is an approximately 300-metre-long balance trail made from logs and natural materials. The trail winds through the forest like a serpent and gives both children and adults the opportunity to play, balance and explore nature in an active and unusual way.
The Midgard Serpent is located in the north-western part of Boserup Forest near Roskilde and functions as a natural playground where movement and play are at the centre of the experience. A long line of logs, tree stumps and other natural elements is placed slightly above the forest floor, creating a winding route through the woodland. Here visitors can balance from log to log and try out different challenges along the way.
The trail is perfect for the classic children’s game “the ground is lava”, where players try to avoid touching the ground. At the same time, the natural materials create an experience that blends naturally with the forest surroundings. The Midgard Serpent also changes over time as the wood gradually decays and new elements are added.
A playful route through the forest
The Midgard Serpent begins at the car park at Boserupvej 100 in Roskilde and continues down through the forest towards Roskilde Fjord. A regular forest path runs alongside the balance trail, making it easy to follow the route from the side.
The name “Midgard Serpent” is inspired by Norse mythology. According to legend, the enormous sea serpent lives in the ocean surrounding the world and encircles it entirely. The winding shape of the trail through the forest has therefore given the balance trail its distinctive name.
Visitors can easily combine the experience with a walk in Boserup Forest, where trails lead through old deciduous woodland and further down towards Roskilde Fjord.
