Sailing trips on Roskilde Fjord with the Viking Ship Museum
Feel the boat move beneath you, take an oar and discover Roskilde’s Viking heritage from the water. Join the Viking Ship Museum for a sailing trip where you become part of the crew, sharing both the work and the views.

Head out onto the fjord
Water laps against the wooden hull as the Museum Harbour slips behind you. Ahead lies Roskilde Fjord, and you and your fellow crew members help the boat on its way. An experienced sailing instructor guides you as you row and help hoist the sail when the weather allows. It is a chance to get a feel for traditional seafaring, with fresh fjord air on your face.
Find your kind of sailing adventure
Would you like to add time on the water to your museum visit? The daily summer trips take place in traditional Nordic wooden boats that carry on boatbuilding traditions from the Viking Age. For a different atmosphere, look for evening sailings in the museum’s programme and experience the fjord in the changing light.
If you would like to explore square-sail techniques in more depth, choose a day course aboard a reconstructed Viking ship. You will get hands-on experience with oars, sails and ropes, with no previous Viking ship sailing experience required.
Travelling with friends, colleagues or a club? You can also arrange a private group trip in a traditional wooden boat or a reconstructed Viking ship. The museum offers team-building activities on the water and sailing trips for school groups too.
Plan your trip
Sailing trips are seasonal. Visit the museum’s website for the current programme, prices, trip lengths and booking. Check the conditions for your chosen trip, including age limits and any language requirements. Dress for the weather and bring an extra layer: it can feel cooler on the fjord than on land. Routes and the use of sails depend on wind and weather.
