Hidden among the trees in Bidstrup Skovene, Jordhuset offers a different kind of family adventure. These woodlands are near the town of Hvalsø in the Lejre area, on the Danish island of Zealand, west of Copenhagen. Jordhuset means “the Earth House”. With its wooden shingle roof, it resembles a giant mushroom, while a winding path takes you down below the forest floor.

Inside, children and adults can explore a hill formed by glaciers from within and discover the soil, stones and stories of the forest. Created by wood artist Thomas Nexø, Jordhuset combines art with an invitation to learn about nature. It is a place to slow down, look closely and investigate what usually lies beneath your feet - an unusual stop on a woodland walk.

Discover stones from the Ice Age

The landscape around Jordhuset was shaped during the Ice Age. As the ice melted, it left hills, hollows and a mixture of stones and gravel. In the exhibition, you can examine stones carried here by the ice and learn more about the ground beneath your feet.

Magnifying glasses, spray bottles and torches help reveal the details of the stones. Children and adults can explore together at their own pace, following their curiosity. Bring your own torch if you can.

Explore tales of elves and trolls

Jordhuset is beside the secluded lake Ellesø. Here, natural history meets folklore: the exhibition also shares tales of elf maidens and trolls. Let the stories inspire your imagination as you continue your walk through the forest.

How to find Jordhuset

Jordhuset is near the Hedvigstrup campsite in Bidstrup Skovene. From the car park by Lerbjergskoven, walk approximately one kilometre along Skrædderhusvej. A small signpost points to a woodland path; Jordhuset is about 50 metres along this path. Keep these Danish place names handy when using a map.

The path and descent into Jordhuset are not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility.
