Hedeland day trip from Copenhagen by train and bike
Explore Hedeland on a day trip from Copenhagen by train and bike. Discover giant wooden trolls, lakes and hilltop views, and stop for lunch at the golf club. You can also continue to Roskilde via Frellsen and Musicon before taking the train back.
Explore Hedeland by bike
From Hedehusene Station, Hedeland is just a short ride away. Paths wind through former gravel pits, where lakes, hills and green spaces now shape the landscape. Bringing your bike lets you explore more of the park, with time to stop for the views or take a break along the way. If you would like to try mountain biking, you can also book a guided tour.
Find the trolls and enjoy the hilltop views
Two of Thomas Dambo’s giant wooden trolls are hidden in Hedeland: Glade Anders and Måne Mor. Park your bike and explore the smaller paths on foot to find them. You can also stop at the ski hill and walk to the top for views across the landscape.
Ride the Hedeland heritage railway
Close to Hedehusene Station, Hedehusgård Station is the starting point for Hedelands Veteranbane, the park’s heritage railway. On operating days, you can experience the landscape aboard a vintage train travelling along the narrow-gauge line through Hedeland. It is a good stop for families and anyone interested in historic trains. Check the timetable before choosing the day for your visit.
Stop for lunch at Hedeland Golf Club
If you have not brought a picnic, stop at Café Le Club at Hedeland Golf Club. The café serves Danish open sandwiches, sandwiches and hot dishes, making it a convenient place for a lunch break while exploring Hedeland. Check the café’s opening hours before setting off. If you enjoy golf, you can also plan your day around a visit to the course.
Experience open-air opera
On performance days, Opera Hedeland can be the highlight of your visit. The nature park’s amphitheatre provides the setting for opera under the open sky. Plan your bike ride with time for a break and the performance, and choose fewer stops along the way.
Continue towards Roskilde with a sweet stop at Frellsen
If you would like to finish your day in Roskilde, you can plan your bike ride via Frellsen’s chocolate factory shop on Industrivej. Pick up chocolate or Danish flødeboller — chocolate-coated marshmallow treats — for the journey home, and look through the glass into the production area when work is underway. Guided tours and flødebolle workshops must be booked in advance.
Finish your day with music, food and city life in Roskilde
Before taking the train back to Copenhagen, you can visit Musicon. Explore the former industrial district, take a break in RabalderParken or visit the Rock Museum if you have time for more. Close to Roskilde Station, Røde Port is an option for a meal and a drink before your journey home.
