A peaceful nature overnight stay on the outskirts of the town of Lejre, with easy access to well-known hiking and cycling routes as well as public transport.

Nature overnight stay close to town and landscape

Lejre shelter and tent site is located in a small wooded area on the outskirts of Lejre, opposite a scout hut and close to the Skjoldungestierne (Skjoldunge Trails). The site is suitable for hikers, cyclists and small groups who want a simple overnight stay in nature without being far from the town and the railway station.

Shelter, tents and facilities

The site features one shelter with sleeping space for 4–5 people, and it is possible to pitch tents next to the shelter. The facilities are simple and functional, making the site suitable for short stays. There is a campfire area and a picnic table with benches at the shelter site, as well as access to a composting toilet. Firewood for free use is typically provided once a week. Drinking water can be collected from a tap at the scout hut, although this is closed during the winter period.

Hiking and cycling routes nearby

The location makes the site an obvious choice for overnight stays on longer trips:

Hiking routes

  • Skjoldungestierne (Skjoldunge Trails): approx. 250 m west of the shelter site (the Gl. Lejre – Osted section)
  • Gudernes Stræde: passes directly by along Klostergårdsvej

Cycling routes

  • Istidsruten (The Ice Age Route), cycle route 44: approx. 1.5 km away along Lejrevej
  • Munkevejen (The Monks’ Route), cycle route 88: approx. 1.5 km away at the junction of Ledreborg Allé / Orehøjvej

Booking, access and transport

The shelter site can be freely used by groups for up to 10 people on a first come, first served basis. Groups of more than 10 people must book the site via Lejre Municipality’s self-service system.

Access to the shelter site is via the scout hut at Klostergårdsvej 66B, 4320 Lejre, where the scout hut’s parking area may be used. The shelter site is located on the opposite side of Klostergårdsvej, directly opposite the scout hut. There is approximately 1.5 km to Lejre Station with regional trains towards Copenhagen and Kalundborg.
