Lavringe Shelter Site

Stay overnight in distinctive, architect-designed Viking-inspired shelters set in the historic landscape of Lejre, peacefully located on a small headland surrounded by the Lavringe Stream.

Architect-designed Viking shelters

Lavringe Shelter Site features two unique shelters, each accommodating up to six people. Designed by the architectural studio NORRØN, the shelters are shaped like the prow of a Viking ship. The design draws directly on the area’s legendary Viking heritage and offers an overnight experience that clearly differs from traditional shelters.

Set on a narrow headland with water on several sides, the site provides a strong sense of tranquillity, closeness to nature and open views of the surrounding landscape.

Overnight stay, booking and access

Overnight stays at Lavringe Shelter Site are free of charge and open to everyone. Groups of up to 10 people can use the shelters on a first-come, first-served basis, or book them free of charge via Friluftsguiden. A valid booking gives priority access if confirmation can be shown, and booking requires creating a user profile.

Groups of more than 10 people must, in addition to booking via Friluftsguiden, apply for permission from Lejre Municipality through its online self-service system for outdoor events.

It is not possible to drive or park close to the shelter site. Access is on foot via the Skjoldung Trails or by bicycle via the Ice Age Route, turning onto a farm track opposite Lejrevej 54 towards the Lavringe Stream. The site is approximately 2.5 km from Lejre railway station, making it well suited for hiking and cycling trips with an overnight stay.

Facilities and outdoor living

The shelter site includes a campfire area, ideal for cooking and socialising. Firewood is regularly supplied by Lejre Municipality, and guests are allowed to collect fallen branches in the surrounding scrub. A composting toilet is also available on site.

The shelters are designed to allow both shared experiences and privacy and are suitable for families, small groups, hikers and cyclists passing through the area. The site is also used for local outdoor activities and nature-based learning for schools and childcare institutions.

Hiking, cycling and local experiences

Lavringe Shelter Site lies directly on the Skjoldung Trails, with the section between Gl. Lejre and Osted passing right by the site. The trails lead through a varied landscape shaped by river valleys, farmland, woodland and visible traces of Viking and medieval history.

National Cycle Route 44, the Ice Age Route, runs approximately 400 metres from the shelter site and offers longer cycling journeys through Zealand’s distinctive glacial landscapes. The combination of hiking and cycling routes makes the site an ideal base for active outdoor experiences, multi-day trips or a peaceful stop in a scenic and historically rich area.
