Kulhuse Shelter

Stay overnight in the heart of nature at the northern tip of Hornsherred, where tranquillity, fjord views and outdoor life come together in a simple and atmospheric shelter experience.

A rare location between Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord

Kulhuse Shelter is uniquely situated on the old coastline, at the end of a former fish-drying area and surrounded by dense, mature scrub that provides shelter and a sense of seclusion. From here, it is just 150 metres along a small path to the northern coast, where you stand with Isefjord to the west and Roskilde Fjord to the east. This location offers a truly special experience of being positioned between two distinct fjord landscapes. The area invites quiet evenings, clear mornings, and close contact with the water all year round.

Simple overnight stay with the essentials in place

The shelter accommodates up to six people and is free to use on a first-come, first-served basis, but can advantageously be booked via Friluftsguiden if you want to be sure of a place. The shelter site includes picnic tables and a fire pit, providing the perfect setting for a classic outdoor meal. Firewood is replenished several times a week, making it easy to light a fire and create a cosy atmosphere. Drinking water and toilet facilities are available at a nearby inn, which is open from Easter until 31 October.

Easy to reach – hard to leave

The shelter site is located at Skansevej 5 in Kulhuse and lies just 100 metres from the car park at Kulhuse Harbour. If you arrive on foot or by bicycle, the Fjord Trail, Regional Route 40, passes directly by the site, making the shelter an ideal stop on a longer journey. During the summer season, the ferry between Kulhuse and Sølager connects Hornsherred with North Zealand in just eight minutes, and both bicycles and cars are carried on board. This makes the area easily accessible – even without a car.

Fjord life as well as walking and cycling routes right outside the shelter

With the shelter as your base, you have direct access to both active experiences and relaxed moments by the fjord, whether you prefer walking, cycling, or getting close to the water.

  • Walking and cycling routes: The Fjord Trail, Regional Route 40, passes directly by the shelter site and makes it an ideal stop for both walkers and cyclists travelling along the fjords.
  • Canoeing and kayaking: Good opportunities for landing at Kulhuse Harbour, approximately 200 metres from the shelter via a path, with easy access to both Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord.
  • Sailing: Kulhuse Harbour has a small number of guest berths and is part of the Free Harbour scheme, making it easy to moor during a stay.
  • Swimming: Fine sandy beaches can be found in several places around the harbour, and there are approximately 300 metres to Kulhuse Beach on the Isefjord, known as Fjordlandet’s best Blue Flag beach.
  • Fishing: Good fishing opportunities along the coast and from the eastern breakwater at Kulhuse Harbour, where flatfish can be caught among other species.

Whether the day is spent on the trails, on the fjord, or by the water’s edge, Kulhuse Shelter is an ideal place to round off your experiences and enjoy the evening in peaceful, nature-rich surroundings.
