Kattinge – landscapes, village charm and rare birdlife
Kattinge is a scenic landscape area characterised by striking ridges, wide-ranging views and a long cultural history. The area combines protected nature with a well-preserved village environment and offers unique opportunities to experience birdlife, forests, lakes and fjord landscapes in close interaction.
Landscape and viewpoints
The Kattinge area lies high in the terrain, overlooking the town of Roskilde, the Kattinge Lakes, and the inlets of Kattinge Vig and Lejre Vig. The long ridge known as Næppet stretches from Gl. Lejre across Kattinge and continues towards Bognæs and Skuldelev Ås. The section between Kattinge village and Kattinge Værk is particularly noted for its panoramic views and visible traces of history.
The Kattinge Lakes and rich birdlife
Large and Small Kattinge Lake are surrounded by reed beds and are renowned for their exceptionally rich birdlife. The lakes are especially known for large flocks of tufted ducks that winter in the area. Up to 20,000 birds gather on the lakes during the day before flying out to the fjord at night to feed. Osprey, marsh harrier, black tern and kingfisher may also be spotted as seasonal visitors.
Kattinge Village and cultural heritage
Kattinge Village is situated high on the Næppet ridge between Large Kattinge Lake and the Toftemose wetland and is regarded as one of Denmark’s best-preserved villages. First mentioned in 1290, the settlement has roots dating back to the Iron Age. Its redistributed village layout, with village pond, farmsteads and open common land, remains clearly visible. At the northern edge of the village are the remains of an old octagonal windmill.
Nature walks and outdoor experiences
Around Large Kattinge Lake, reed beds, deciduous woodland, coastal meadows and fjord landscapes meet. Although the area is protected, it offers excellent opportunities for walking and cycling. A birdwatching tower at the northern end of the lake provides particularly good views, especially during winter. A wheelchair-accessible fishing spot is available west of Kattinge Værk.
Boserup Forest and Kattinge Værk
The coastal Boserup Forest offers varied nature experiences throughout the year. In spring, the forest floor is famous for its carpets of flowers, especially along the Anemone Trail, where white, blue and yellow anemones bloom. Kattinge Værk, a former water-powered fulling mill, lies between Large Kattinge Lake and Kattinge Vig and forms a natural focal point in the area.
Explore the landscape on foot or by bike and experience the close interplay between nature, history and the fjord.
