The Völva’s Workshop at Lejre Museum – magic, myths and amulets

During the autumn half-term, children and families can explore the magical world of the Viking Age at Lejre Museum. The Völva’s Workshop combines storytelling with creative activities, introducing children to tales of myths, dark forces and supernatural beings – and giving them the chance to create their own amulet inspired by Viking Age beliefs.

The Völva’s Workshop begins in the museum exhibition, where one of Lejre Museum’s guides introduces visitors to Viking Age magic, myths and beliefs about the supernatural. The first 15 minutes or so are devoted to storytelling before the activity continues in the creative workshop.

Create a charm to ward off dark forces

In the workshop, children can make their own amulet – an object believed in the Viking Age to offer protection against evil forces. They can also make other pieces of jewellery or colour in drawings of the frightening creatures that appear in the old tales.

The entire activity lasts approximately one hour and is aimed at children aged 4 to 12. There is no need to book, so families can simply turn up for one of the day’s sessions.
