Boserup Forest near Roskilde
Boserup Forest is one of the most popular natural areas near Roskilde and forms part of the Skjoldungernes Land National Park. The forest reaches right down to Roskilde Fjord and is around 3–4 km from the centre of Roskilde.
Boserup Forest is a wonderful place to visit throughout the year. There is plenty of space for outdoor activities, nature experiences, and relaxed family outings. In the designated quiet forest area, visitors can enjoy peace and contemplation, while the mountain bike trail offers opportunities for speed and a more physically active experience.
The soil in Boserup Forest is particularly fertile, and the terrain is gently hilly. Beech trees are the most common species, and in spring the forest floor is covered with a rich carpet of flowers, including corydalis and wood anemones. All three Danish species of anemone can be found here: the white, the blue and the yellow anemone. The varied woodland provides habitat for many bird species. In early summer you can hear a chorus of birdsong from chaffinches, nightingales and other songbirds. In winter, you may be lucky enough to see large flocks of bramblings.
In the centre of the forest you will find Boserupgård Nature Centre, which shares knowledge about the area's natural environment and local history.
Rørmosen
Within Boserup Forest lies Rørmosen, a wet woodland area where nature is largely left to develop undisturbed. Fallen trees, water-filled hollows and lush vegetation create ideal conditions for a wide range of plants and wildlife.
A wooden boardwalk allows visitors to walk through the wetland without getting their feet wet. The path winds between the trees and offers views of small ponds and the surrounding marsh landscape. Along the way there are small resting spots, including benches where visitors can pause and enjoy the quiet surroundings or listen for birds – especially the nightingale, famous for its powerful song in early summer.
The wetland is a remnant of a former branch of Roskilde Fjord, which in the Stone Age extended inland east of Boserup Forest. Today the area is an important habitat with moist, lime-rich soil supporting a diverse range of animal and plant species.
The Midgard Serpent – play and balance in nature
In Boserup Forest, both children and adults can test their balance on the Midgard Serpent, a winding wooden sculpture inspired by Norse mythology. Visitors can walk, balance and play their way through the forest along the long wooden serpent that winds through the landscape. The Midgard Serpent is a popular stop during a walk in the forest and a fun way for the whole family to experience nature.
Cycling routes and mountain bike trails
Boserup Forest is ideal for cycling and stretches all the way down to Roskilde Fjord, the long fjord that runs inland from the Kattegat Sea near the city of Roskilde. Here you can explore gravel roads and small forest paths suitable for the whole family. If you move quietly, you may encounter a rich variety of wildlife, and it is not unusual to see roe deer at close range.
For those looking for more of a challenge, the forest also features a mountain bike trail of approximately 10 kilometres. The route is hilly but without large elevation gains, and it is maintained by a local mountain bike club that has made it varied and enjoyable to ride. Remember to bring a helmet and water.
