Roskilde Cathedral – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and 800 years of royal history
Roskilde Cathedral is Denmark’s most important church – a Gothic medieval cathedral, royal mausoleum, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Take the train to Roskilde, Lejre and Frederikssund and discover the very best of Fjordlandet – a scenic region of fjords, Viking heritage and charming market towns, just a short journey from Copenhagen.
From Copenhagen Central Station, you can take the S-train to Frederikssund, or a regional train directly to Roskilde and Lejre Station in just 25 minutes. Hop off wherever you like in Fjordlandet and start exploring. You can also save money on a comfortable journey by purchasing a DSB Orange ticket (discounted advance fare) or a travel pass.
So sit back, relax and let the train take you to memorable experiences in Fjordlandet and Skjoldungernes Land National Park.
Just 25 minutes from Copenhagen, Roskilde rises above the surrounding landscape, beautifully situated by Roskilde Fjord. Here you will find history, culture and nature in abundance – as well as inviting restaurants where you can recharge and reflect on the day’s experiences.
Roskilde’s story dates back to the Viking Age and the Middle Ages. One of its main attractions is Roskilde Cathedral, the burial church of Danish monarchs and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its striking architecture. Roskilde also appeals to younger visitors: Denmark’s Rock Museum (Ragnarock) offers interactive exhibitions on pop, rock and youth culture, while the Viking Ship Museum – with its working boatyard – is a delight for children and adults alike. At the same time, Roskilde is a vibrant, modern town with pedestrian shopping streets, boutiques and cosy cafés.
Here you are close to the capital – yet far from everyday life. Explore the legendary Kings’ Halls at Lejre Museum, step into Viking life at Sagnlandet Lejre (Land of Legends), an open-air archaeological park, or immerse yourself in historic weapons collections at Egholm Castle’s armoury museum. Do not miss the fresh country air and the rolling green landscapes that make Lejre part of Skjoldungernes Land National Park.
Enjoy the tranquillity on foot along the Skjoldung Trail, winding through meadows and gentle hills, or take to your mountain bike and feel the rush on the challenging MTB trails in Bidstrup Forest.
In Frederikssund, you can enjoy scenic boat trips on the fjord, shopping, art at the J.F. Willumsen Museum (dedicated to one of Denmark’s notable modern artists) and a traditional Danish ice cream from Hansens Is by the harbour.
Do not miss Hornsherred, the picturesque peninsula between Isefjord and Roskilde Fjord, located just across the two bridges – Crown Prince Frederik’s Bridge and Crown Princess Mary’s Bridge. Here, town life gives way to rural idyll, with attractions such as Jægerspris Castle, Selsø Manor House Museum, the organic farming community Svanholm and ancient oak trees that are more than a thousand years old.
The southern part of Hornsherred, near Skibby, is also part of Skjoldungernes Land National Park. Recommended stops include Hansens Dairy Café in Lyngerup and Svanholm’s farm shop.
