Jeanette’s local recommendations

Why should people visit Roskilde?

Because the city has a bit of everything – and it never stands still!

Roskilde offers nature, culture, and constant development. We have the fjord, the city’s historic core with Roskilde Cathedral (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the charming district of Sankt Jørgensbjerg, and the Viking Ship Museum.
There’s also a lively high street with cosy side streets, many small independent shops, and great places to eat. And then there’s Musicon – the city’s creative district, full of innovation and entrepreneurial spirit.

If you had just one day in Roskilde, what should you see?

Start with a walk around Roskilde Cathedral, then follow the Skjoldungestien Trail through Byparken and down to the harbour. From here, you’ll have a fantastic view over Roskilde Fjord.

At the harbour, take your time to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, the small wooden jetties, and the Viking Ship Museum’s boatbuilders at work. The whole area has a wonderful maritime feel – and if you’d like to experience the fjord from the water, you can take a trip aboard the Sagafjord cruise boat and enjoy a cup of coffee as you sail.

Next, continue along the fjord to Kællingehaven – a small, hidden corner of Roskilde that’s perfect for quiet walks and moments of reflection. At certain times of day, you might even have it all to yourself – it’s a lovely place to unwind and clear your head after a busy day.

At weekends, visit Sct. Hans Have, a charming garden café where you can enjoy good coffee, homemade cakes, and light meals served inside old greenhouses – a little green oasis within the city.

Finish your day in the district of Sankt Jørgensbjerg, where old fishermen’s cottages with thatched roofs, a small church, and a village pond create a truly picturesque and historic atmosphere. The narrow, steep streets offer beautiful views over the fjord and harbour – the perfect way to end your visit to Roskilde.
