Local recommendations – Christina Adler Jensen
Christina has lived at Svanholm Collective – Denmark’s largest community – for more than 14 years. She lives there with her husband and two children and greatly appreciates the surrounding nature and the strong sense of togetherness, which she considers an essential part of her life.
She works as a communications officer in Egedal Municipality. The family used to live in Copenhagen, but their wish for more nature, peace, and a stronger community led them to Svanholm – and they have felt at home ever since.
Interests: Life and togetherness in the collective, walking, and reading.

What would you recommend visitors to experience in Fjordlandet?
I would recommend a trip to Møllekrogen and Selsø Castle. It’s a beautiful area where fjord, forest, and cliffs meet, and there are small trails that take you around the point and all the way to the castle.
At the small harbour in Møllekrogen, you can borrow canoes from the Skjoldungernes Land National Park free of charge. We often go canoeing to enjoy the scenery from the water – it’s a fantastic way to experience the area. You can even paddle all the way to Gershøj if you’re up for a longer trip.
Another place we love is Jægerspris Castle Park. Our children go to school nearby, so we often walk in the park and the surrounding forest. Behind the castle is a small cemetery with gravestones bearing children’s names – a thought-provoking and touching place that tells stories from the past.
And what about a swim – where would you go?
In summer, our favourite bathing spot is Gershøj Beach. It’s a cosy little beach with a lively harbour atmosphere, a diving platform, and a slide in the water – the kids love it.
Next to the beach is Gershøj Inn & Seaside Hotel, which looks lovely, and we’re looking forward to visiting it one day.

Are there any places one shouldn’t miss in Fjordlandet?
Svanholm is definitely a must-see. It’s Denmark’s largest collective, home to around 80 adults and 50 children – a place with a unique history and strong shared values. We share finances, a communal kitchen, and meetings, and many visitors are curious about what life here is like. You can learn more during our guided tours.
We’re surrounded by beautiful nature and run an exciting organic farm, which was among the pioneers of organic agriculture in Denmark.
Another favourite place for our family is Hansens Ice Cream. Svanholm supplies the milk, and the dairy is just a short drive away. They’ve created a charming ice cream café in the old dairy building, where you can enjoy their delicious ice cream, dip it in chocolate, and choose from all kinds of sprinkles – it’s a real treat for both children and adults.
